Brookfield woman fills Danbury-area food pantries with donations – 1 truckload at a time: ‘A lifeline’

By Dan Nowak, Sportswriter, News reporter

FIRST DANBURY – Kerri Colombo starts her part-time job early in the morning, getting behind the wheel of a refrigerated box truck while many are just rolling out of bed.

It’s a labor of love as the Brookfield resident drives to participating stores in the greater Danbury area, fills the truck from back to front and from bottom to top with un-sold and surplus food and delivers the items to local food pantries.

As part of the Community Food Rescue program, the food is distributed for free to community residents who are food insecure.

“It is very rewarding work on many levels,” said Colombo, who works part time for the nonprofit that helps get food to residents in need. “It’s got a great environmental impact. The food I pick up would otherwise go to waste and be thrown out if not delivered to pantries and food banks.”
